About Nogales, Arizona

Founded in 1880 by a San Francisco merchant, Jacob Isaacson, and named after the towns prosperous black walnut trees (nogal), Nogales offered the first Southern Pacific Railroad connection between the United States and Mexico.


Today, with a population just under 21,000 residents, the community of Nogales offers all of the benefits of small-town living but within close proximity the larger metropolitan city of Phoenix.


Among the outdoor exploration options in Nogales are several caves located in the Santa Rita Mountains. Explore the Cave of the Bells—known for its unique and varied range of minerals and formations. Nogales also offers more than a dozen trails for varies levels of hiking, bird watching and biking.


Other Nogales attractions include the Pimeria Alta Historical Society Museum and the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory. Or, take an in-depth tour of Mexico’s Copper Canyon on the Great Train Escape. The Canyon is four times the size of the Grand Canyon and offers one of the most dramatic panorama views in the world.
